The ultimate bitumen emulsion product for dust control and road stabilisation
DAS Product is the flagship product technology of Dust-A-Side and has been successfully applied around the world for over four decades. The product is an emulsion of bitumen in water, specifically designed and formulated to physically bind road materials together and suppress dust on haul roads, secondary roadways, hardstands as well as laydown areas in mining and other heavy industrial environments.
What is a bitumen emulsion?
A bituminous emulsion is a two-phase mixture of fine bitumen droplets and emulsifiers, dispersed in water. The binding and sealing properties, robustness and re-workability of bitumen makes it a highly reliable dust control solution, particularly for treating and maintaining haul roads.
As a bitumen emulsion, DAS Product is specifically formulated to minimise wheel generated dust, as well as bind, seal and suppress fugitive dust. Once applied, it forms a water-impermeable layer that doesn’t leach into permeable pavement materials and the underlying natural soils. Not all bitumen emulsions are the same however. DAS Product’s formulation is optimised for stability in variable water quality and ease of penetration into the haul road wearing course.
How is DAS Product applied?
For existing, permanent haul and access roads, which are being newly established, DAS Product can be incorporated into the wearing course layer of the road. This happens via a scarifying, spraying, mixing and rolling process. This not only provides excellent dust control properties for the road, but also stabilises the wearing course layer and prevents water ingress. Investing in DAS Product during the construction of new life of mine roads will significantly increase the longevity and durability of the road.
In order to suppress dust on more temporary road surfaces, DAS Product can be applied via a series of light dilution spraying using a water cart. Once applied, the need for reapplication is minimal. Mines which typically rely on continuously spraying untreated water on haul road networks in order to control dust will dramatically reduce water usage and water cart hours by switching to DAS Product.
For haul and access roads which are being newly established, DAS Product can be incorporated into the wearing course layer of the road. This not only provides excellent dust control properties for the road, but also stabilises the wearing course layer and prevents water ingress. Investing in DAS Product during the construction of new roads will significantly increase the longevity and durability of the road, which is particularly prudent for life of mine roads and spine roads.
DAS Product is conveniently delivered in a concentrated liquid form ready to use. It is typically diluted in a water cart at a concentration of 2.5% right up to 50% depending on the specific requirement.
How does DAS Product reduce dust and stabilise haul roads?
As soon as the emulsion breaks and the bitumen content cures, DAS Product acts as a binder to the road road material and forms a solid pavement and impermeable seal that resists the further ingress of water. Preventing water ingress over time also helps reduce road defects such as potholes, corrugations and rutting.
DAS Product is therefore also considered to be an all-weather treatment and roads will recover much more quickly from heavy rain and remain dust free when during dry periods.
How else can DAS Product be used?
In addition to application on roads, DAS Product can be used for capping dust on tailing dams. When tailing tams dry out, they become very dusty and need to be treated as they take up large areas of land on a mine site, potentially causing significant site-wide dust issues if left unattended. In these circumstances, a light spraying of DAS Product can be used as a coating for effectively suppressing air borne dust coming off from a tailing dam.
DAS Product can also be used for rehabilitation/revegetation efforts, particularly in mine sites. When mixed in with seedlings, it can be sprayed over large areas of land. The bitumen emulsion will help to stabilise the soil and prevent erosion. This gives the seedlings time to germinate and helps to return the site back to the state it was before any mining work occurred. Such efforts have become extremely important for mines to adopt in order to make good on their operating leases and meeting community expectations of commitment to sustainability measures.
