Product Overview

A bituminous emulsion is a two-phase mixture of fine bitumen droplets and emulsifiers, dispersed in water. The binding and sealing properties, robustness and re-workability of bitumen makes it a highly reliable dust control solution, particularly for treating and maintaining haul roads.

Once applied, it forms a water-impermeable layer that doesn’t leach into permeable pavement materials and the underlying natural soils which minimise wheel generated dust, as well as bind, seal and suppress fugitive dust.

How does DAS Product work?

Once DAS Product is applied, it forms a water-impermeable layer that doesn’t leach into permeable pavement materials and the underlying natural soils which minimise wheel generated dust, as well as bind, seal and suppress fugitive dust.

As soon as the emulsion breaks and the bitumen content cures, DAS Product acts as a binder to the road road material and forms a solid pavement and impermeable seal that resists the further ingress of water.  Preventing water ingress over time also helps reduce road defects such as potholes, corrugations and rutting.

DAS Product is therefore also considered to be an all-weather treatment and roads will recover much more quickly from heavy rain and remain dust free when during dry periods.

How is DAS Product applied?

For existing roads, as well as roads which are being newly established, DAS Product can be incorporated into the wearing course layer. This happens via a spraying and blending process. This not only provides excellent dust control properties for the road, but also stabilises the wearing course layer and prevents water ingress. Investing in DAS Product during the construction of new life of mine roads will significantly increase the longevity and durability of the road.

Once applied, the need for reapplication is minimal. Areas which typically rely on continuously spraying untreated water on haul road networks in order to control dust will dramatically reduce water usage and water cart hours by switching to DAS Product.

DAS Product is conveniently delivered in a concentrated liquid form ready to use. It is typically diluted in a water cart at a concentration of 2.5% right up to 50% depending on the specific requirement.

What is DAS Product?

DAS Product is the flagship bituminous emulsion from Dust-A-Side Australia. It is specifically designed for dust control and road stabilisation in industrial, mining, and civil applications.

What is DAS Product made of?

It is a two-phase emulsion comprising fine bitumen droplets and specialised emulsifiers dispersed in water. This formulation allows it to bind road materials effectively while suppressing dust.

How does DAS Product work?
When applied, DAS Product cures to form a water‐impermeable layer that binds and seals the road surface. This durable layer minimises water ingress, reduces dust generation, and protects against common road defects such as potholes and rutting.
What are the main benefits of using DAS Product?
Key advantages include significant dust suppression, up to 95% reduction in water use, improved road durability, operational cost savings (from reduced tyre wear, fuel consumption, and maintenance), and enhanced road safety through better surface visibility.
What makes DAS Product different from other dust suppressants?
DAS Product is distinct in that it is not merely a dust suppressant - it’s a comprehensive road stabilisation solution. Unlike traditional water-based suppressants that require frequent reapplication, DAS Product forms a durable, water‐impermeable layer that binds the road materials together. This unique bituminous emulsion not only reduces dust generation but also enhances road longevity, significantly cuts water usage, and delivers operational savings through lower tyre wear, fuel consumption, and reduced maintenance requirements.
How is DAS Product applied?
DAS Product is delivered as a concentrated liquid and is typically diluted in water carts at concentrations from 1% up to 50%—depending on project needs. For permanent roads, it can be incorporated into the wearing course via scarifying, spraying, mixing, and rolling.
What equipment is required for application?
Standard water carts and spraying systems are generally used. In cases where incorporation into the wearing course is required, additional equipment such as scarifiers, mixers, and rollers may be employed.
Can DAS Product be applied by our own team?

Yes. Its ease of use allows for in-house application. However, Dust-A-Side Australia also offers various service packages to suit different operational needs, these include:

  • Remote Supervision: Our project supervisors can visit your site at mutually agreed-upon times.
  • Managed Services: A full-time project supervisor from Dust-A-Side Australia will attend your site to oversee the delivery and implementation of our dust control solutions, utilising the client's existing assets (e.g. water carts). In this service, we also provide telemetry, consulting, project management, and reporting.
  • Full Service: In addition to a full-time project supervisor on site along with telemetry, consulting, project management, and reporting, we also supply the required assets and personnel such as trucks, water carts, graders, suppression equipment, and operators.
How much area does a single application cover?
The coverage area for DAS Product varies considerably depending on several factors, including the dilution rate, the method of application, and the condition or porosity of the surface. For instance, when applied at a lower concentration (such as around 2.5%), a litre of diluted DAS Product might typically cover approximately 2-3 square metres. However, higher concentrations - used for more challenging conditions or specific performance requirements - may result in a reduced coverage area. We recommend consulting with our technical team to obtain a more precise estimate tailored to your specific project conditions and requirements.
How effective is DAS Product at controlling dust and stabilising roads?
DAS Product has a proven track record in binding road materials and significantly reducing dust levels. Its robust formulation also enhances road stability, which is especially beneficial for high-traffic haul and access roads.
How long does the treatment last?
Once cured, DAS Product forms a durable, impermeable layer that typically requires minimal reapplication. Longevity will vary based on factors such as traffic intensity, weather conditions, and site-specific usage, but treated roads generally enjoy extended service periods.
Is DAS Product suitable for heavy traffic and variable weather conditions?
Yes. DAS Product is engineered to withstand heavy traffic loads and perform in both dry and wet weather conditions. Its water‐impermeable properties also facilitate quicker recovery of road surfaces after heavy rain.
Is DAS Product environmentally friendly?
It is environmentally stable once applied, with low bioaccumulation potential. However, spills into waterways should be avoided, as they may cause contamination. While it is not classified as hazardous, it consists primarily of bitumen, a petroleum-derived substance.
