What are dust suppression systems?
There are two ways to control fugitive dust with water sprays during mining and materials handling processes.
You can ‘nip it in the bud’ with a low pressure (< 10 bar) dust prevention system that uses large volumes of water at close range to contain the errant dust, usually close to the source such as the beginning of the transfer point. Being low pressure, the droplets are much coarser, so this is more accurately described as a wetting system rather than a misting system.
And/or you can utilise a dust suppression misting system which conversely uses lower volumes of water at high pressure (> 50 bar) to add a fine atomised mist to the air and thus capture and subdue dust particles that are already airborne. Suppression systems are ideal in instances where it is not practical to pre-wet material or where there are challenges with water availability, pooling of water, and blockages in the downstream materials handling process caused by hang-up of material.
Dust suppression and dust prevention systems are not exclusive; many operations have both systems configured to effectively control dust.

Dust suppression is most effective when the dust particles and atomised water droplets are of equivalent size, so they will combine & fall to the ground, assisted by gravity. If the water droplets are too large, they will displace too much air, forcing the dust particles to flow around them.
Hydrowet helps to break the surface tension of water particles, leading to smaller water droplets (between 5 and 10 microns) that attract dust particles to them, via agglomeration. This process is particularly effective when managing hydrophobic materials such as fine ores.
